Four hotels are planned for Providence

PROVIDENCE — If you think downtown has too many hotels, brace yourself, because next year you’re likely to see three or four more going up.

The city already has 2,353 hotel rooms according to the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau, but the developers of four announced projects, which would add a combined 441 rooms or suites to that total, say they are building for visitors that the city’s hotel inventory doesn’t serve.

Martha Sheridan, visitors bureau president and CEO, said one area where the city is lacking is in accommodations for extended stay-visitors, especially business travelers who come in teams to work on long-term projects with businesses or colleges in Rhode Island.

“We have no extended stay for the corporate and transient project people who are typically here for a longer stay and want to feel at home,” she said.
