Referendum targeting Israel will not appear on Pittsburgh ballot in November

PITTSBURGH — A proposed referendum to ban Pittsburgh from dealing with those who do business in or with Israel will not appear on the November election ballot.

Allegheny County Judge John T. McVay Jr. signed a consent order indicating all sides ultimately agreed the referendum petitions lacked enough valid signatures.

The referendum would have prohibited "investment or allocation of public funds, including tax exemptions, to entities that conduct business operations with or in the state of Israel, unless and until Israel ends its military action in Gaza" and fully allows humanitarian aid there.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, which challenged the referendum on multiple grounds, calls that a win.
