Shamokin City Council welcomes controversial member

SUNBURY – A man who won a seat on Shamokin City Council was sworn-in Monday and became an active member all while a Northumberland County district attorney tries to bar him because of a criminal record.

Joseph J. Leschinskie Jr. (R) late Monday afternoon participated as a voting member in city council’s reorganization meeting. He will oversee the public works department.

He was sworn-in earlier in the day by a notary public, and Northumberland County Judge Charles H. Saylor in mid-afternoon took no action to stop him from being seated.

District Attorney Tony Matulewicz is seeking to have Leschinskie disqualified because of two drug convictions.

Besides the two felony drug convictions in 2009, Leschinskie has two pending charges including a terroristic threat of a former city council member.
