Tips from a COVID-19 vaccine hunter: She has bagged 200-plus appointments

Jen Clements, a Shippensburg University professor who has helped more than 200 people get a COVID-19 vaccination appointment, offers some tips for those searching for shots. The tips are based on her experience and information from sources including the PA COVID Vaccine Matchmaker Facebook group. (Note: Some of the following information is crowdsourced and subject to change.)

First off, be sure you or the person you’re helping is eligible for vaccine during the current stage. You can find out here:

Clements recommends using a computer to seek online appointments. While it’s possible with a smartphone, it’s harder to navigate the webpages.
She has found these vaccine providers tend to list doses at these times:

Rite Aid — midnight on Tuesday through Saturday
Weis Markets— between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Wegmans — 11 a.m. on Tuesdays
She has found that there seems to be no pattern for Giant Food Stores and Sam’s Club

It all seems hit or miss. I swear my mom and step-dad lucked out on their shots because he happened to be in a pharmacy picking up a prescription when the pharmacist asked him if he wanted to sign up. Others signing up and getting calls out of the blue; literally a Friday evening email for a Monday afternoon appointment.

No matter, every person vaccinated gets us all closer to making it our turn. Except for those anti-vaccers. No real sympathy for them.

3. Eastern PA/Lehigh Valley

If you’re anywhere near a St. Luke’s hospital, sign up on their site. Eventually you will get an email that leads directly into setting up an appointment. My husband signed up in January and got his email last week, getting 1st Pfizer shot on Thurs.

4. If you get a chance to go to a FEMA/National Guard drive-through site

Snap it up. Here in CA, they seem to put appointments up in the morning. I had no problem sailing right through to get appointments. They even take your insurance information when you register. Absolutely no paperwork when you get there.
