Moravian College announces it's becoming a university
BETHLEHEM -- Moravian College announced Tuesday that it is becoming a university.
The college said it began the process this fall. The move is subject to approval by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which Moravian expects to complete by 2021, the announcement on the colleges website said.
The change would reflect Moravians growth and its addition of graduate programs leading to master and doctoral degrees, the college said, while colleges are typically smaller and focus mainly on undergraduate education.
The benefits of switching to university status include a better fit for Moravians academic offerings, a more competitive academic and athletic landscape, greater prestige and more applications from students, who generally favor universities over colleges, the website said.
