New name for Civil War rivalry right under Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers noses

Calling Oregon and Oregon State’s rivalry “The Civil War” never made sense.

Over the years I tried to explain to outsiders that the rivalry name was born more than 100 years ago of a tired sports/war metaphor, never intended as an actual reference to the American Civil War.

That confused association officially ended Friday. UO and OSU released a joint statement, announcing they no longer will use the term “Civil War” in connection with their sports rivalry games. The sides will pick something new. But this should not be left to a marketing firm or a group of outside consultants.

It’s a job for you and me.

It can’t be forced. In fact, I don’t really think there’s much of a debate about what the rivalry should be called moving forward. The series features the Ducks and Beavers. It already has a trophy with an amazing and unusual story. And so if they want to pick a name for the rivalry that makes sense, and captures the unique and interesting flavor of our state, there can be only one selection.

full with ducks and beavers, and so much fun watching their rivalry. I would play switch header. Go Beavers, Go Ducks, whoever I was talking to, I didn't care. But, man they take it seriously. Yes, a name name is fine. I gotta know to promote and staying in the competitive nature of it all, I bet the ducks will be more gracious to change than the beavers. Just a hunch, lol.

It's called the Bucket game for short. Maybe you guys need a "Bucket Game". Winner puts a link in the chain with their initial as the link. And keeps the Bucket until the game the following year. Where it is again decided who has won the Bucket for a year.
