Protester files lawsuit after being pepper sprayed during Portland City Hall demonstration

A woman who took part in an October protest at Portland City Hall over the approval of a controversial new police contract is suing the city, claiming she was pepper-sprayed twice without warning despite following officers' commands to leave the building.

Allyson Drozd said she was standing outside and to the side of a City Hall doorway Oct. 12 taking pictures after Portland police forced protesters out, the federal lawsuit against the City of Portland said.

The door opened, and a Portland police officer reached around it and sprayed Drozd in the face, the lawsuit said. As she was walking down the City Hall steps, she was sprayed a second time, she said.

Police had no provocation to hit Drozd with pepper spray because she wasn't committing a crime and they had no reason to believe she was going to cause harm to officers or anyone else.
