OU professor argues university's response to racism incidents violates free speech
Last November, University of Oklahoma President David Boren stepped onto the South Oval, megaphone in hand, and denounced the words of a small group of demonstrators.
They were not students; the pair of race-baiting provocateurs accused Black Lives Matter protesters of being simply destructive rioters for hire. Many saw their efforts as simply trying to stir up trouble, including Boren.
“I want you all to know, and I think it’s very important — and I’ve heard you chanting ‘not on our campus’ — that we’re in a very delicate period all across our country,” Boren said at the time. “People feel they have some kind of permission to spew this kind of talk, to preach hatred, to preach division at a time when if ever we needed to be together, it’s now.”
Boren’s words matched a tone of inclusion and togetherness OU administration has been promoting, especially following the 2015 incident involving Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members who were caught on video taking part in a racist chant.
