COLUMBUS – Since passage of a 2019 law now embroiled in criminal scandal, Ohio has had the least stringent clean-energy requirements of any U.S. state with a renewable standard, a survey of state policies shows.

While most states over the past two decades have increased the percentage of energy their utilities distribute that must come from renewable sources, Ohio has rolled back its requirement. Of 31 states with a “renewable energy portfolio standard” (RPS), Ohio derives the smallest share of its energy from renewable sources, according to a 2021 survey from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which conducts research for the U.S. Department of Energy.

For instance, since 2019, Washington D.C., Virginia, and Washington state have all adopted 100% zero-carbon clean energy requirements by 2050. New Mexico raised its target to 80%. Maryland, Maine and Nevada increased theirs to 50%.

Utilities in Ohio need only 8.5% renewable energy by 2026 to meet state requirements.

There is alleged bribery, pay-for-play shenanigans. First Energy is hip-deep in it. Larry Householder is embroiled and has really suffered no consequences. The Ohio Republican Party also ignored rulings that their redistricting was unconstitutional.

The media is doing some stuff but the statehouse legislative districts are so screwed up that the Republican majority doesn’t come close to matching the voter percentages so they basically do whatever they want. Householder who was deeply involved in HB 6 and the bribery hasn’t been really punished for his acts. He has been removed from office and indicted but no trial yet.
