School districts across Ohio will be able to authorize teachers, principals and other staff to carry firearms into classrooms this fall after 24 hours of training.
The new law, signed Monday by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, will lower the required training hours for armed school personnel from about 700 hours to four scenario-based training hours, plus a maximum of 20 hours for first-aid training, history of school shootings and reunification education.
The signing came the same day Ohio's new constitutional carry law took effect.
Opponents argued DeWine walked back on promises to address gun violence after a gunman killed nine people in Dayton in 2019. The governor responded to cries of "do something" by unveiling a package of gun control reforms, but they never went anywhere in the GOP-controlled Legislature.
"I feel like a putz for believing him," Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said. "He did something, alright. He gave in like a coward, and he made the problem worse."
DeWine has signed three bills loosening gun restrictions since the shooting.

A lot worse.
Guns are a disease. Not equalizers or peacemakers.

(17,449 posts)It was something like 740+ hours of training. It had to be certified by a registered 3rd party.
Now it's 24 hours, and you self certify.
What could possibly go wrong?

(6,797 posts)when they get mad. Can you imagine if they have guns? Someone help these poor children. Wonder how many teachers will carry in private schools?

(3,224 posts)I would immediately insist that she not be in the same classroom with that teacher. I'd even consider getting a protection order if necessary. If they can't accommodate that, I'd move her to a new school.
I would imagine there will be lawsuits over school districts failing to accommodate parents and their children over this sort of thing.

I agree, I would never want any of my boys in a classroom where the teacher had a gun. What the hell kind of classroom is that. Next will be watchtowers with snipers and barbed wire fences.

(3,224 posts)...will eventually be obliged to provide gun-free spaces.
Your point is well-taken, though, and I hedged my confidence with the word "reasonable." The courts haven't shown a whole lot of interest in being reasonable these days, so I could be wrong.

(2,577 posts)I keep thinking about their teachers (many of them really good educators) armed to shoot. Nahh ... it would not have worked.
I mentioned this in a different thread, but Ohio is working on legislation to prevent teachers from teaching "divisive concepts" (the evil critical race theory that exists only right-wing fevered imaginations in K-12 classrooms) and from anything related to LGBTQ (the "don't say gay" thing). So if Ms. Frizzle can't be trusted to teach her curriculum, why is she being trusted with a firearm with very limited training? I puzzle and puzzle about this, but my elderly lie-brul brain just can't figure it out.

(2,293 posts)until some Foxhole Magat starts screaming at a teacher about CRT, "the gays", and the teacher stands her ground, fears for her life, and puts a bullet in the nutbag. Or, when it dawns on them the law also applies to black people, too..
OTOH, it may just make the disruptive students more respectful......
