Ohio governor's race: Democrats require staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19; GOP does not

As the delta variant emerges as a threat to unvaccinated Ohioans, Democrats running for governor say they'll require staff to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley's campaign manager announced Thursday that all current and future staff would need to be vaccinated against COVID-19. They encouraged other candidates for governor to do the same.

“No one wants to go back to lockdowns and closures, and the COVID-19 vaccine is the way we can avoid that," campaign manager John Hagner said in a statement. "Everyone on our campaign interacts with Ohio voters every day, and we owe them the confidence of knowing we’ve done everything we can to protect them."

Whaley's campaign decision comes shortly after requiring city employees to be either vaccinated or regularly tested for the vaccine. On Thursday, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther required masks, but not vaccinations, for all city employees.
