Openly gay woman running for sheriff in Ohio wins primary against Trump-supporting Democrat with 70%

An openly gay woman has decisively won a race against her opponent — and former boss — in an election to decide the Democratic candidate who will run for Hamilton County Sheriff in November.

Charmaine McGuffey, 62, defeated Hamilton’s County current sheriff, Jim Neil, 61, and will now face Republican Bruce Hoffbauer in the general election.

In the stunning victory against a two-time incumbent, McGuffey received about 70% of the votes, according to unofficial results.

The county Democratic Party endorsed McGuffey over Neil, who angered many Democrats after attending a Donald Trump political rally in 2016.

Hamilton County is a county located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 802,374.[2] making it the third-most populous county in Ohio. Hamilton County historically elected Republican candidates in national elections, but has trended Democratic in recent years. In 2008, Barack Obama was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win the county since 1964. The county continued to lean Democratic, voting for Obama again in 2012 and for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016. In fact, it was one of the few counties in Ohio to swing toward the Democrats in 2016 even as the state as a whole had swung toward the Republicans. In the 2018 midterm elections, with the election of Democrat Stephanie Summerow Dumas, the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners was completely under Democratic control for the first time ever.[23] They had previously regained a 2/3rds majority control of the Board of Commissioners in 2016 with the election of Denise Driehaus. In 2019, longtime Democratic Commissioner Todd Portune announced his resignation from the Board due to health problems. Portune's Chief of Staff, Victoria Parks, was appointed to serve the remainder of his term (through the November 2020 general election). With Parks' appointment, the Board of Commissioners became for the first time all-female and majority black.[20]

Due to its tight races and its position in the swing state of Ohio, Hamilton County is regarded as a crucial county to win in presidential elections. In 2012, The Washington Post named Hamilton as one of the seven most important counties in the country for that year's election.[24] Time characterized Hamilton County's political scene as "a battle between conservative suburbs and a Democratic urban center, though Cincinnati is one of the most conservative metro areas in the Midwest."

Attended college in Oxford, and later married into a Dayton family; husband lived in Cinti, represented that district in Ohio House! (He was a Republican, surprised my parents that I'd marry 'such,' but in no way 'radical.' Didn't vote for bushII)

My only memory of Cinti is merely driving through on my way home from school years ago.

I remember being impressed by the beauty of the bridge and the river, with the stadium and the city alongside it.

Darn it, I should've stopped to tour the city a little - but I was anxious to get home. Winter holiday, as I recall.

'“The current sheriff and I got into a pretty serious disagreement about the practice of him not holding officers accountable for use of force and harassment of women, female officers, and female inmates,” McGuffey told LGBTQ Nation. “He fired me. So after about a year or so of contemplating, I decided I can do a better job than him.”

“Quite frankly, my opponent has pretended to be a Democrat for many years now, when he’s actually much more aligned with the Tea Party Republicans. He tells people what they want to hear and then doesn’t follow through.”

“[My election] would mean that our country is moving forward,” she said at before the vote, “that we really have moved away from the 1950s model of law enforcement, where not just women are embraced in the law enforcement world, but also LGBTQ members of the community can wear a uniform and be quite successful.”

McGuffey spent 33 years working in the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). When she was promoted to Major in Command of jail and court services, she also became the highest-ranking woman in the HCSO’s history.'

I haven't been to New York in over 20 years, sadly. What a city - a city in the truest sense of the word.

And to think Cheeto won't move a pudgy, orange finger for his own hometown. Inconscionable.

I am in New York at the very least once a year. I have work there in January. Plus, my elder daughter, born and grew up here in the German Rheinland now lives there as well. She always loved visiting my maternal grandfather, who lived there all his life. He lived to be 102. She couldn't wait to get back there, and spent the last 2 years of her college education there. She looked for a job, lived in a horrible apartment for way too much money. She didn't care. "I'm home!" she said. And so she still is.

My dad's father was from Charleston, SC, got into Harvard before World War I and worked his way through as a janitor. I still have a photo of FDR on my wall, inscribed to him "from his friend, Franklin Roosevelt." He settled in New York, and apparently made the right kind of friends!

Not Trump's kind of friends. Well, that is a relative expression in Trump's case, as he doesn't really have friends, just people who are useful to him.

17. It's a holiday here, not that it makes a lot of difference!

We celebrate Labor Day on May 1 here. Our younger daughter is driving up from Frankfurt (about 2 hours) with her daughter (almost 2). Her second one is due in a month. I think we're far from being out of the woods, alas. Until the Germans can get their act together and get people tested on a mass basis, uncertainty will continue to reign, and things won't even approach getting to normal for a long time. The economy will do its best not to collapse in the meantime, but a LOT of people are hurting right now.
