Target of Trump's ire, Dayton's mayor leads city out of tragedy

DAYTON — The tweet landed with an “oh well” at around 4 p.m. as Nan Whaley, three days after the mass shooting in her city, was wrapping up one of the many interviews she’s given since a 30-second spray of bullets changed everything.

“We have Fox in 30 minutes and the President tweeted about you,” her media handler, Michael McGovern, whispered to her at The Trolley Stop, a cozy tavern a block away from where a gunman shot and killed nine people and injured 27 more early last Sunday.

“Where is it?” she said, looking down at her phone. “I don’t see it.”




“You got two tweets,” said Mr. McGovern, the communications director for a liberal policy think tank, Innovation Ohio, who has been volunteering with Ms. Whaley to help manage the barrage of media requests following the shooting.
