Columbus man pleads guilty in $9 million car scam

A Near East Side man will have to repay $9.3 million in ill-gotten gains from an online car-selling scam as part of a plea deal submitted in federal court in Columbus.

Terry J. Boutwell, 36, of Woodland Park, also faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a single count of money laundering before U.S. District Chief Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr., capping a years-long, multi-state investigation.

Tiffany A. Strobl, 39, also of Woodland Park, and Shalitha R. Schexnayder, 39, of Miami, Florida, also pleaded guilty in the case, admitting involvement in a scheme that bilked hundreds of people out of millions of dollars.

Authorities say Boutwell was the ringleader of the operation. Ohio victims were in Toledo, Canton, Mayfield Heights, Butler and other locations, they said.
