$69 billion budget plan passes Ohio House with strong bipartisan support
COLUMBUS, Ohio—The Ohio House on Thursday gave its final OK to a proposed $69 billion, two-year state budget that includes sizable personal income-tax cuts, raising Ohio’s minimum age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 21, and more money for education and children’s services.
The massive bill, which passed 85-9, now heads to the Ohio Senate, which is all but certain to make its own significant changes to the legislation.
Notably, all but two House Democrats voted for the Republican-authored budget bill.
Tax changes
Under the House’s version of the budget, Ohioans with taxable incomes of $22,250 or less would no longer have to pay state income taxes. Tax rates for everyone else would be reduced by about 6.6 percent.
