Former Mount Sterling administrator gets 10 years for stealing from village

Former Mount Sterling administrator Joe Johnson was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday and ordered to repay more than $700,000 in restitution for stealing from the Madison County village.

Johnson had originally faced 30 counts related to theft in office, but pleaded guilty this year to a single count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, a first-degree felony; two counts each of theft in office, money laundering, and tampering with records, all third-degree felonies.

Johnson, 46, who was relaxed and joking at his plea hearing in January, was more subdued and showed little emotion as Madison County Common Pleas Judge Eamon Costello read the sentencing terms.

His wife, Tara, and teenage children also were present, but did not speak on Johnson's behalf.
