Ohio treasurer calls to outlaw sanctuary cities
COLUMBUS State Treasurer Josh Mandel on Monday called for legislation to outlaw sanctuary cities in Ohio and make officials in such cities criminally and civilly liable for injuries from crime committed by illegal immigrants within their borders.
We have liberal politicians throughout America spitting in the face of immigrants who came here legally and did it the right way, Mr. Mandel said.
The treasurer took specific aim at Cincinnati, which recently declared itself to be a sanctuary city, and Columbus. The latter has vowed not to enforce federal immigration laws on undocumented people routinely encountered by law enforcement within their borders, but stopped short of calling itself a sanctuary city.
This legislation is about protecting parents and protecting kids here in Ohio, Mr. Mandel said. I believe we must have a zero-tolerance policy when the safety of our children is at stake. ... We should be doing something proactively rather than wait to see what will happen by allowing big-city, Democratic mayors to make their cities sanctuary cities.
