Cincinnati Enquirer: Clinton remains best choice
Six weeks ago, The Enquirer editorial board endorsed Hillary Clinton, calling her the only choice when we elect a president in November. Since then, we've seen a host of "October surprises" that have put first Republican Donald Trump and then Clinton on the defensive. The most recent was FBI Director James Comey's report to Congress that the bureau had found emails that "appear to be pertinent" to its previous investigation of Clinton's private email server. Yes, this editorial board was and is concerned about Clinton's careless handling of government email. We remain far more concerned, however, about Trump. His cowboy attitude about foreign affairs. His divisive comments that have alienated large segments of those he would lead. His fundamental lack of understanding about how government works.
Even with the email controversy, Clinton is still the better choice for America. She has a command of the issues, both foreign and domestic, as demonstrated by her debate performances versus Trump. Clinton has remained cool under fire compared to Trump, who has cried about "rigged elections" whenever his campaign has faced adversity or negative publicity - a key indicator of temperament.
We have been disappointed with the way Clinton has addressed the email scandal. While she has apologized, Clinton has not confronted it head-on and delivered explanations to the American people that would have put this controversy to bed long ago. This election is far closer than it should be given the experience gap between the two candidates, and Clinton may be as much to blame for that as anyone. Trump cannot escape the stain of his divisive rhetoric, sexual assault allegations and refusal to release his tax returns.
Trump remains a clear and present danger to our country, and the Enquirer editorial board renews its endorsement of Clinton.
