Federal Judge blocks law cutting funds for Planned Parenthood
COLUMBUS A federal judge on Friday blocked an Ohio law that would have diverted the last government funding from Planned Parenthood clinics across the state.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWines office said it will appeal the decision to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.
U.S. District Judge Michael R. Barrett in Columbus said the new state law infringes on the constitutional rights of Planned Parenthoods Greater Ohio and Southwest Ohio Region organizations to free speech and equal protection under the law.
The judge made permanent his prior preliminary order in May that prevents the state Department of Health from carrying out its plan to deny 28 Planned Parenthood clinics the last $1.3 million in federal funds it had been sending their way for health services not tied to abortion.
