Democratic gay-rights group blasts Republican Cuyahoga County executive candidate over domestic partnership vote

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Stonewall Democrats, a group that advocates for LGBT causes, has accused Cuyahoga County executive candidate Jack Schron of hypocrisy for seeking support from gay voters after having voted against extending county benefits to partners of same-sex marriages.
Rob Rivera, president of the group, said Schron's recent sponsorship of this year's Gay Games in Cleveland will not win the Republican candidate gay and lesbian support, given his dissenting vote as a county council member in 2012, when a majority of council approved the benefit extension to same-sex couples.
"I think taking a stand for an event like the Gay Games sounds good," Rivera said in an interview with Northeast Ohio Media Group. "But really what we need from our political leaders is when push comes to shove, they'll actually vote for equality."
In an interview this week, Schron said he supported the county extending benefits in theory, but voted against the 2012 legislation because it didn't include provisions to cover unmarried, opposite-sex couples. He tried, but failed, to have the legislation amended to that effect, he said....
