According to the Urban Institutes American Affordability Tracker, average rent, groceries, and day care for two in Ohio are more than $55,000 a year.
While not officially impoverished, a large swath of the population faces expenses beyond its means.
Conventional measures of economic insecurity, like the poverty rate, only capture acute need and shed no light on the hardships of millions of people who struggle to pay their bills and save for the future people who are economically insecure and not poised to thrive, the report said.
Without adequate data, policymakers cannot develop effective solutions to help their constituents and communities meet their economic challenges.
The reports findings might be of interest to politicians who want to help parents. Thats because when kids are involved, the numbers are worse.
Nationwide, 56% of households with kids fall below the security threshold. Forty four percent of families without kids did.
If a household is headed by a single parent, matters are even worse. Nearly 90% dont earn enough to meet the security threshold, the report said.
In two-parent households with three or more kids, two thirds fall below the threshold.
The numbers are also bleak for households with an older person in need of care. In those, 75% dont make enough to be economically secure.
And there are racial disparities.
Among non-Hispanic whites, 41% dont make enough to be secure. Among Blacks and Hispanics, about 65% dont.
In its report, the Urban Institute said the government needs to address the fact that so many families are having such a hard time getting by.
Millions of Americans struggle to pay their bills, fear unexpected expenses, and are ill-prepared to weather job losses, sickness, and hazardous climate and environmental events, it said.
Many of these people are too often rendered invisible when narrow or inadequate measures of poverty drive public conversation and policy changes.

(14,430 posts)The Pentagon spent over $7.4 million on lobster tails in each of the months of March, May, June, and October of 2025.
At the very least and I mean VERY LEAST... the American people deserve to see the Government spending, top to bottom including the Pentagon,
AUDITED.
This whole administration is a heist while American families are having trouble meeting their monthly bills.
I think there are trillions of dollars in misappropriated, and outright stolen taxpayer dollars.
Is this not something that should anger every American?

(10,590 posts)Republicans have maintained a majority in both chambers of the Ohio General Assembly (the state legislature) since the 19951996 session, or 30 years as of 2025. Hey, I'm in the same boat here, Republicans have been running the state for decades, after huge tax cuts for the ruling class we have a huge deficit. Now anything that benefits anyone but the ruling class has no chance of passing. Plus all the bullshit culture issues to distract.

(4,013 posts)$55,000? $130,000? The article spent a lot time and charts detailing specific costs and mentioning their TSEC, but i couldn't find the dollar amount they considered the least amount needed to be considered "secure".

(37,564 posts)Except for 3 stores near me in Michigan, I mostly shop in Toledo because the prices are better, especially on fuel.
After about 7 years of living in Ohio, I moved back to Michigan, mainly because of the laws in Ohio and Publican politics.
