What the hell? I thought the r lawmakers passed a law putting a cap on property taxes in Ohio? Is this their gd idea of reducing property taxes? Is this a joke?

(22,844 posts)My friend just got the Homestead Exemption. I read a few things about the tx raise. The r's made changes but they didn't go into effect to stop the hit from the 3 year reassessment on values. And other reassessment reforms.
My street hasn't been paved for 15 years, in spite of increasing taxes. Some people bought a house and turned it into a repair business, with up to 3 dozen cars or partial cars in view, and God knows what seeping onto the street. The local police depts. use them. Another person has a furniture repair shop. Two garage buildings one of which was built and closed because the owner didn't get the licensing to run a business. The cops evidently use his services. The other garage is eternally unfinished. Anyway, when we moved here, the street wasn't zoned for light industry. Now, in spite of paying high end taxes, the street has turned into a slum.
I doubt I could sell my house for anywhere near what the assessors think it might be worth.
Thanks.

(22,844 posts)The other people on the street hate Nature. I hate to think of the last big trees on the street being destroyed.

(40,019 posts)Were on a main road here, about 3 houses from an intersection with 2 convenience stores and a gas station. The other corner has a small used car lot. Its always a worry over if commercial interests will creep closer. Zoning regulations seem non existent. So I know the feeling. So far we have been lucky.
The house next door was vacant for several years after the elderly owners died, and it was really starting to to go to pot and become an eyesore. Thankfully a young single guy ended up buying it and has done a few things to fix it up, but it needs a lot more.
