Feds sentence North Dakota pastor for poaching trophy elk in national park

A Grand Forks, North Dakota pastor was sentenced on Friday in federal court in Bismarck for poaching a trophy elk last fall in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the North Dakota Badlands.

A federal judge magistrate ordered the Rev. Mark Hale, 50, to pay restitution of $3,000 to the park and pay a $500 fine for illegally killing the elk in the park, according to court documents.

Hale violated the U.S. Lacey Act by transporting an illegally taken elk after killing the animal within park boundaries, according to prosecutors.

Hale admitted illegally shooting a bull elk inside the park north of Medora on Sept. 7, 2016, and taking meat and the antlers and head.
