Cleared for takeoff: $250 million Williston Basin International Airport breaks ground

Williston’s airport relocation project moved into its next phase Monday afternoon, when a full slate of officials broke ground at the future site of the Williston Basin International Airport.

For Beth Christmann, the experience was slightly surreal, as she stood on land that had been in the family since the early 1900s. The fields now belong to the city, and will eventually be the location of the new airport’s terminal.

“It’s hard, but we’re proud. I think Dad would be very happy,” she said of her late father, who had often said he thought one day there would be an airport near his land.

Five of the seven property owners that the city negotiated with for nearly 1,700 acres are in Christmann’s family. Overall, she said, her family experienced few problems while selling their farmland.
