Huge Confederate flag in NC now has a neighbor -- a Black Lives Matter billboard

A Confederate battle flag in North Carolina now has a Black Lives Matter billboard beside it.

Drivers can see the new sign along the U.S. Highway 64 East business route in Pittsboro, according to a GoFundMe page that says it raised money for the project.

“Shoutouts To The Community Of Pittsboro That Came Together To Make This Happen,” Kerwin Pittman, founder and director of Recidivism Reduction Educational Program Services, wrote Monday on Facebook.

The billboard, which will be up for a year, features the words “Black Lives Matter” and was “paid for by RREPS & Emancipate NC,” according to photos Pittman shared with McClatchy News. He said he has worked alongside people in the community, who chose the messaging.

Overwhelm the bigots with our numbers. Show them that we, the vast majority, are America, not them with their racist, anti-American traitorous flag.

I have a severe criticism of the linked article, however. Nowhere does it indicate who put up the Confederate flag. At the end of the linked article, it says that "the battle flag that flies near the billboard was “put there by a man angry over the county’s removal of Confederate monuments,” according to Joel Brown, a reporter with ABC11." There is another link in the article but it doesn't identify who erected that symbol of losers.

That's piss-poor journalism. Who is the person that is so blatantly making their "First Amendment" statement? If they are so proud of their point of view, why haven't they identified themselves? Why didn't the ABC11 "reporter" do his fucking job and inform his viewers?

The angry man should be publicly exposed and brutally shamed for his disgusting act of bigotry. Just don't expect so-called reporter Joel Brown to do his job.

It's been amazing to watch the past couple of months and see the accelerated pace of change with regard to Confederate memorials. I say, take them all down and put some of them in museums. They have no place in a civilized society, (are we still "civilized" in the U.S.?).

name in the article, but someone conscientiously made that decision. Perhaps that person or business also advertises in the newspaper?

If a reporter (along with their editor) is going to tell a story, give us all the facts. Otherwise the report approaches propaganda.

If the decision to not list the flag owner's name is because of the newspaper's advertising business, that would be a disgusting editorial, journalistic and business decision.

Hopefully, they're turning a page to a better future.

In 1860 nearly one-third of the county population was made up of enslaved African Americans. After the Civil War and emancipation, whites used violence and other means to enforce white supremacy and suppress the freedmen's vote. The Ku Klux Klan and other supremacist groups were active in the county.[6]

Pittsboro was the scene of a notorious mass lynching of four African Americans in 1885, including a woman. The event earned statewide condemnation. Those lynched were tenant farmers. A masked mob took Jerry Finch, his wife Harriet, and Lee Tyson from jail, where they were being held after arrest as suspects in a robbery/murder case.[6] Harriet Finch was one of four black women to be lynched in the state.[7]

Believe it or not, I lived in Pittsboro for 6 months many years ago. Before Trump, most everyone kept their racism to themselves. Trump gave permission for these idiots to once again be proud, and vocal, about their racism. Glad to see the pushback.

"Two groups, the "Virginia Flaggers" and ACTBAC of North Carolina, take credit on Facebook for the flag raising."
