NC legislation aims to help offenders clear their records, gain employment. "This is absolutely a jobs bill," its sponsor says.


RALEIGH — Every time 28-year-old Poet Williams applies for a job, his arrest record comes up: three nonviolent misdemeanors.

Those drug charges have followed the Durham resident since he was 21, barring him from jobs, apartments and opportunities.

"I've put out so many applications trying to find a job," he said. "Burger King wouldn't even hire me."

Soon, however, he may be able to remove those offenses from his record.

It will mean so much to so many people. Especially to a good friend of mine. Is there more info in the article? I'm blocked from the W-S Journal. For instance, who's the bill's sponsor?

2. One of the primary bill sponsors is Republican Sen. Danny Britt of Robeson County,.

Crimes that require sex offense registration and traffic infractions couldn't be expunged. However, it will allow people with drug convictions and writing bad checks to clear their records. If the bill is passed it should open up work opportunities for a significant number of people.
