Silent Sam Survives
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has announced its recommendation that the school build a new, $5.3 million building to house the Confederate monument.

When Silent Sam, the statue of a Confederate soldier that stood sentinel at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until he was yanked from his station in August, was being dedicated in 1913, Julian Carr, a philanthropist and white supremacist, took a moment to brag. I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds, he said in his speech, adding that he performed the pleasing duty in front of his entire garrison.
On Saturday, Duke University announced that it would remove Carrs name from a building on its East Campus. [The] white supremacist actions that Carr pursued throughout his life, even when considered in light of the time in which they were held, are inconsistent with the fundamental aspirations of this university, the committee that voted to remove his name wrote.
Two days later, and 10 miles down the road, UNCs board of trustees convened to decide the fate of the monument that Carr was helping to dedicate 105 years ago. Ever since the statue was taken down on August 20, the question has always been whether it would go back up, and in what capacity. At a special board-of-trustees meeting on Monday, Carol Folt, the chancellor of UNC Chapel Hill, announced the boards recommendation: Silent Sam would stay on the UNC campus, albeit in a less pronounced position.
Administrators at the university recommended that the school build a $5.3 million building on campus to house the monument, Folt announced. The new, yet-to-be-named university history center would have state-of-the-art security and an operating budget of $800,000 a year.
Snip.

(33,643 posts)Somehow I have a feeling ... someone is trying to make a point.
Keeping this statue 'up' (and safe) ... is going to cost a metric fuckton of $$$.
The outcry over these numbers will be swift and fierce, mark my words ... AIN'T HAPPENING.
Caveat: Unless some wealthy a-hole alum steps up and forks over a $10M 'Silent Sam' endowment.

(25,483 posts)ABOUT THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS
The University of North Carolina System is governed by the Board of Governors, which under Chapter 116 of the North Carolina General Statutes has responsibility for the planning, development, and overall governance of the UNC System. The Board elects the president of the UNC System.
BOARD MEMBERSHIP
Currently, the Board of Governors consists of 28 voting members, elected by the North Carolina General Assembly to staggered four-year terms. Additionally, the president of the UNC Association of Student Governments serves as a nonvoting, ex officio member of the Board. Beginning on July 1, 2019, the Board of Governors will have 24 voting members.
BOARD OFFICERS
The Board of Governors elects a chair, vice chair, and secretary from among its voting membership for two-year terms beginning on July 1 of even-numbered years. The current officers are:
Chair: Harry Smith, Jr.
Vice Chair: Randall C. Ramsey
Secretary: Pearl Burris-Floyd
GOVERNANCE
The General Assembly of 1971 created the current governing structure of the University of North Carolina System, including the reformation of the former Board of Trustees into the present Board of Governors. Since that time, it has been led by 18 chairs, and the system has grown to include 17 constituent institutions and various associated entities.
The Board of Governors maintains The Code and the UNC Policy Manual. The Code incorporates the requirements of the constitution and General Statutes, as well as Board bylaws and other high-level policies. The UNC Policy Manual provides more specific direction and policies on university matters.

(25,483 posts)The UNC board of governors will have the final say on whether the recommendation is accepted at its meeting December 14. And at least one member of the board has already declared that he believes that the monument should be placed back on the perch where it lived for so many years.

(33,643 posts)+ 800,000/year.
I seriously doubt the Board will approve this unless MAYBE if some rich fool comes up with like a $10M "Silent Sam Endowment" to get his name on the building.
These numbers are absurd. REALLY don't see it happening, not unless a private person pays.

(25,483 posts)Sickening. The article was fair in its report. North Carolina is in a sad state of affairs.

(6,325 posts)The University has been totally constrained by the Repub concert rolled legislature. Almost no one in Chapel Hill is happy with this situation.
