Fifteen-year-old Landon Evans is the new N.C. Freshwater Fish State Record holder for blue catfish after landing a 117-pound, eight-ounce fish during a June 11 trip to Lake Gaston. The record was confirmed after being weighed on certified scales in Littleton and being identified by District III Assistant Fisheries Biologist Evan Cartablano.
Evans caught the whopper fishing with cut shad on 50-pound test line fishing from a dock. The fish measured 55 inches in length and 40 ½ inches in girth.
The catch is the third time the state record for freshwater blue catfish has been broken in seven months. Zakk Royce caught state records on back-to-back days in December, first a 91-pounder, then a 105-pounder.
Evans fish is also likely to become an International Game Fish Association Junior world record.
