McCrory signs second measure whittling Cooper's power

RALEIGH -- North Carolina Republican Gov. Pat McCrory on Monday signed into law the second of two bills diminishing the authority of the incoming Democratic governor, but said he resisted efforts to weaken Roy Cooper even more.

Together, the new laws enable the Republican-controlled legislature to forcefully assert its constitutional power as the dominant branch of government.

Democrats and national political pundits called the legislature’s actions in last week’s special session a GOP “coup” aimed at nullifying Cooper’s narrow victory over McCrory in last month’s election. Hundreds of protesters stormed the Legislative Building on Thursday and Friday, leading to dozens of arrests. But McCrory on Monday downplayed the impact of the legislation.

He said he worked closely with legislative leaders to protect the separation of powers.

Don't know if this will have to go to the supremes.

This is what scares me about the republicans. Once they gain power they don't want to give it up.

but the NC Supreme Court has a 4-3 majority in favor of the Democrats. Considering that Cooper was the AG, I would expect that he can find sufficient grounds to contest the legislation.

Hopefully, NC can dust off and reshine it's star. I'm hopeful, all things considered.

While it offends any reasonable sense of fairness, it isn't all that unusual for outgoing politicians about to lose power to exercise that power as they are on their way out. For example - a state legislature removing from the governor the power to appoint Senators (in the event of a vacancy) when the governor's mansion changes hands.

Best Christmas present all its citizens could get is him as gov. Now, time to work on our reps.with the 2017 special election. I am praying our outgoing pres. will be helping out somewhere, somehow, behind the scenes in getting us organized. Meanwhile, time to Rise NC!!
