APEX The Wake County school system barred several school choirs from performing at this years Apex Christmas Nativity Celebration following a complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
The Wisconsin-based foundation argued that it was unconstitutional for the school choirs to perform at the annual nativity celebration sponsored by the Church of Latter-day Saints in Apex. Wake school officials said they acted after the foundation forwarded a YouTube video in which a church official makes statements such as how the event represents a wonderful opportunity for you to bear testimony of Christ to your friends.
The advice of Tharrington Smith (the districts attorney) is that it put the district in the position of potentially endorsing a religious viewpoint, Tim Simmons, a Wake schools spokesman, said in an interview Tuesday.

(9,447 posts)1. Actually, as an atheist, I am saddened by this
I love Christmas carols and would miss hearing them.
I think that all religions should be honored and their festivals be respected.

There is a Constitution in this country that guarantees the Separation of Church and State. Enjoy your carols all you want, but not on my dime.

My heart is full enough to love my country and all the people who died protecting our values and laws. We live in a nation where Christmas music is allowed because of that Constitution. It goes both ways. You want to protect everyone's right to practice any religion they chose? Protect the Constitution.
