(32,059 posts)Show unbelievable flooding and devastation throughout the mountains of western NC. It would not be surprising to see the death toll rise. It's just horrific to see what Helene did.

(25,038 posts)But as no one has cell phone coverage or very few do , and there are more than 1,000 citizens there , there has to be some credible reason to report that . ..
I worry that they are underestimating , but hope you are correct

As a person who grew up in Southern Appalachia ,I know how terrible floods are.
Send all good vibes for those citizens

(2,000 posts)It was devastated by Helene, the high winds and the Swannanoa river. All of the houses on his street were covered in water up to the roof, except his because he's on a hill. He didn't evacuate and his car floated away and then submerged. Some of the his neighbors evacuated, but some stayed. He told me he heard neighbors screaming and believes some are dead.
He rescued a man who was being pulled along with the raging waters flowing down his street..
He watched 2 others flow by, unsure of their fate.
Roads and streets are full of mud, debris, missing asphalt, and sink holes,
Many of the big trees have been removed by locals with chainsaws.
Abandoned cars seem to be everywhere.
Many in Asheville haven't even been able to text until today, with portable cell towers brought in.
I texted several friends in Asheville over the past few days and only started hearing back today.
One couple has a home below the road. They had damage but were ok. But many folks had their homes buried in water or mud, or fall off or with the side of a mountain. Those folks and others are unaccounted for, especially now that there's a way to connect and file inquiries or get in touch, they're getting more information on missing people and many they're not able to find .

Did you just get back on line?
Do you have power?
I'm heartbroken and worried about many people in Asheville and here in Hendersonville who lost everything! I lost a freezer worth of food, but rescued some of it
My bosses, 3rd generation, just decided to get a generator.
Their home in Laurel Park still without power.
Hendersonville community coop just got delivery of fresh produce today, more on order. Stuff comes from California! Cash only, like many places!
Community pulling together to help each other!
Thanks for the shout out!

(60,496 posts)So phone, text, and some internet if I'm patient, depends on time of day. We have a gas stove and hot water heater, and water - no damage to our home - so we're lucky.
Holler if you need help!
