'We are not going to be intimidated' NC's top elections official says, as FBI investigates threats
A suspicious package containing a white powdery substance mailed to the North Carolina State Board of Elections wont scare the states elections administrators from doing their jobs, elections director Karen Brinson Bell told reporters Monday.
Its other pieces of mail theyre more focused on anyway: Mail-in ballots went out Friday to overseas and military voters and already as of Monday morning, 102 peoples ballots had been returned to be counted. The 2024 election has officially begun in North Carolina.
Bell gave few details of the apparent threat, except to say the FBI is investigating and that while nobody was hurt, state and county-level elections workers will now be using extra precautions when processing mail such as wearing gloves while they work. Those workers could soon be opening, examining and tallying hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots from voters across the state, as millions of North Carolinians are expected to participate in this years elections.
We are not going to be intimidated by this, Bell said. We are going to do the core work the compass that drives us to ensure every eligible voter is able to cast their ballot.
