So I didn't look yesterday

and the first thing I learned this morning is that Beasley lost to a trump nut.

WTF NC - I'm slowly gathering that the news is otherwise good for Dems but WTF NC.

I think Cheri Beasley was a candidate who was way more than qualified for the job, but I’m not sure her campaign was the strongest. I probably saw 100 Budd ads, for every 10 Beasley ads. The Budd ads of course mentioned nothing about what he stands for, just basically “Ohh, look the scary black lady. Vote for me instead.”

that it worked.
Racism should be a reason to vote the other way but it's very strong here.

I'm happy for that. I really am. Tim Ryan lost (made me cry!), Cheri Beasley lost, but a lot of other good candidates won. I think I'll go back to sleep for a bit.

I'm more upset about Beasley because I live here it's true. I lost respect for the majority of the voters who live here with me. There are people I know who probably voted for Budd because he's white and republican without regard to the reality of what republicans have done and continue to do to what could be a great place to live. I hate that they are so blinded by the white.

I come from California, which has its own issues with race no doubt about that. But they aren't still litigating the civil war in CA. Most people there do vote for the party that governs. Sigh.

yeah. not feeling happy this morning at all. I wish I could be celebrating but this was a cold slap in the face. I don't even think it was close.

elected them because they're bigots. I'm so sorry.

But NC has made progress and will continue to. Take time to feel crappy, and then, as I know you will, keep the faith.

15. I'm more upset we lost the NC supreme court

NC is known for splitting votes but we didn't see that in this election. It wasn't as close as many recent races here. That doesn't bode well for so many reasons. A friend who is a NC native told me the state would not elect a black female senator, too much racism still here. I'm from NYC originally, here for 20 years, but I really thought we had a shot, especially against a cult 45 member.

Although I am very disappointed that Beasely lost, I am more concerned we also lost our 4/3 majority, now a 2/5 minority in the state supreme court. An incumbent and and open Dem seat both went red!

Gerrymandering, and loss of abortion rights and voting rights are almost guaranteed.
I console myself that our new 14th Congressional district went to a Democrat, so we will have 7/7 in Congress. And in our state house there's no supermajority, but there is in the senate.

I'm only 61, and came here to care for my mom, who passed 6 years ago.
I've thought of leaving the South many times since then, contemplating where I might go, while living my life here and being a blue voice in a red zone. Thought of staying in the area and moving to Buncombe county, the blue oasis in my red region. No place is perfect but some counties and states and countries are better or more appealing than others. I'll be more seriously considering my options. There's a lot I love about where I live, but a lot I don't. The northeast may be calling me home.

and that is lamentable.
I'm in Durham, the best place to be. But we can't hold up the whole state. it just sucks so bad. I've been here 15 years, from CA, and still homesick!

We don't even have to imagine how bad they'll be: they will show us. aargh

So I enjoy reading data, and following races, and summarizing or identifying results and trends. Just a hobby. lol (degree in applied research and statistical analysis)

I happen to have a rare day off today, and will be looking at the races and following the results as they come in throughout the day. Fun fun. Hopefully good outcomes.

I crunch numbers and make lists after presidential elections, to determine which states are "very good" or "very bad" >60% for one party: and which states are "good" or "bad" which have >52%. Then there are the "unlucky" or "lucky" states where the win is within a few points. Those are the tossup states, the purple states mostly. NC is in that category, unlucky. But it seems our adopted state is moving towards "bad".
Still many good people here, I remind us both.

And when they show us how bad they can be, perhaps we will get lucky in the next election, and motivated enough to win or split the vote, get rid of some of them. But I'd now predict in 24 this state would again go for tfg, and our governor race will be open due to term limits. They might elect another Dem, to give the appearance of a bipartisan state, but the core of NC is deep red. I've just realized that.

Ads they ran against her were despicable. They also made me ill. I was so hopeful but here we are again stuck with a "good old boy" who doesn't deserve to walk on the same ground her feet touch.

I wish I had more encouraging words.

I'm not sure if I'll go back to volunteering. This go round was pretty exhausting and I already have life fvcking health issues that are not going to get better. Time for the young people to step up.

I guess I put too much hope in this election. I'm tired of just barely surviving as a democracy, i want to live in a fully realized one. But clearly this will not happen in my lifetime.

you're right about the young people. Many of them are just beyond great. But sadly the rightwing media machine is busy turning many others into zombies. it just sucks.
