NYC-ers, can you recommend a Broadway play?

My son wants to buy us tickets, including transportation up! This will be his Christmas gift to us.

He's asking what we'd like to see; however, we don't know enough to make a choice.
Sooo, any recommendations are welcome. Thanks so much!

I can get you the information today. My niece is an agent in NY. She goes to all the shows

Wasn’t sure about it when our son and his GF got the family tickets, but we loved it! If you like mythology stories and jazz music, it’s a good choice.

I saw it twice in Chicago before it hit Broadway. It’s excellent. It’s kind of like a story within a concert.

Had a friend see it. We are going to see the national tour.

My suggestion in general would be to pick something that isn't on tour yet but has a lot of buzz. But that would depend on which tours are coming near you

It is ending it’s historic run in February.
If there are even tickets available… that would be my suggestion.

Any show will be worth the trip. There is nothing like Broadway. Enjoy!

I love going to the theatre. Don't live in NYC anymore, but now get to see several shows on tour. I prefer musicals, and there are so many to choose from. Here's a list with links to information about all the Broadway shows.

Have you seen wicked? I'm a big wizard of oz fan, and really enjoyed it.
I'm seeing Fiddler on the roof on tour. I saw it live 40+ years ago, looking forward to seeing it again.
Six and Hadestown are both newer, Tony award winning shows that are on my list.

As a theatre goer, I find myself sometimes seeing shows I've already seen, because I enjoy them.
You said your son saw Hamilton twice. I got to see it on tour and I'd see it again. He might enjoy seeing it again.

I suggest giving him a list of 3 shows, and let him make the decision and arrangements.

And loved it!

The ONLY drawback to seeing Broadway productions is that the tickets can be expensive but our son covered ours and we had great seats.

So glad you enjoyed the show. Thanksgiving weekend is a fun time to be in NYC.

Many years ago they used to print two-for vouchers for certain shows, and we'd find them in libraries, schools, at some doctor's offices, and some retail shops. I saw a lot of shows 1/2 price that way. And there used to be a booth at Time's square where they sold same day tickets at great discounts, opened a few hours before the theatres, and there was always a line. A version still exists, I looked it up.

If I were in NYC today I'd visit the weekend farmer's and holiday markets at 14th Street Union square, always enjoyed that on Saturday mornings.. Last summer I was there, took a commuter ferry ride up the East River and back. Great views, passed by the upper east side where I was born. The extensive ferry service was started after I left, and it was fun and cheap, and less walking. Lol
Enjoy the time with your son, and rest of your visit there!

On the train back home now.
We were so busy we didn't have time for the Christmas / Farmers' Markets so that's next time. And there WILL be a next time. We're hooked and understand our son's love of the city.... however, I love our home in the trees back in Wmsbrg, Virginia.

Am saving your link. Thx so much!

I just read this article about a Broadway museum in NYC that just opened.
Sounds really interesting.

My parents left NYC when I was in my mid 20's, and my dad, who was born and raised there, never wanted to go back. Nothing there for him. I was there, but he was a harsh conservative who'd found his haven here in Western NC. My mom, a liberal Democrat originally from Canada, moved to NYC and enjoyed live theatre and dance, taking me to many shows over the years. After they left, my mother would visit me every year and we'd go to a show, and traipse around old and new stomping grounds. I have wonderful memories of her visits. I'd also see them in NC several times a year, and Mom would often get tickets for the state theatre here, which is nearby. I think of her every time I see a show.

Growing up we also went to interesting museums when we traveled, including colonial Williamsburg. Nice you can get a train to NYC from there. I'd love to see it again, and have thought about stopping for a day on my way up north the next time I manage to drive there, which could be years!
Enjoy your day.

Our son is in love with the city, lives just a couple of blocks south of Central Park on the Avenue of Americas, works in 4 World Trade Bldg - what a structure! He took us to the top floors Spotify occupies. Just WOW!
