Press Release: Committee Formed to Begin Planning for Bicentennial of Slavery Abolition in New York State
For Immediate Release: July 4, 2020


The Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State today announces the formation of a statewide committee to begin planning for the bicentennial of the legal abolition of slavery in New York, which took effect on July 4, 1827.

The program, Freedom 2027: New York State’s Abolition Bicentennial, will commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the end of enslavement in the state. The movement to end slavery brought together Free Black Americans, Freedom Seekers, and abolitionists. The initiative also will celebrate the resilience and contributions of Black Americans to the development of New York and recognize that the fight for full freedom and equality is not over.

URCNYS was founded in 2015 to research and promote the history of the Underground Railroad. Members come from sites around New York that were outposts of Underground Railroad activity.

I was sort of hinting this was coming in a posting yesterday on the Civil War history vs reality of slavery.

1. Hmmm? But there was the abrupt end of Reconstruction...

with no promised forty acres and a mule, and of course the many decades of jim crow, and still the continued racial injustice to this day. Such a celebration rings hollow to me.

Just a public acknowledgement instead of hyped, media event seems more appropriate.
