Related: About this forumBroadway Will Remain Shut Through at Least Labor Day
Its official: There will be no Broadway shows in New York this summer.
The Broadway League, a trade organization representing producers and theater owners, said Tuesday that Broadways 41 theaters would remain shuttered at least through Labor Day.
The announcement is not a surprise; the coronavirus pandemic is continuing to kill more than 150 people a day in New York state (down from the peak of 800), and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has put arts and entertainment in the last phase of his reopening plan.
It remains unclear when Broadway might reopen. Many industry officials believe it will be considerably later than Labor Day. The practical effect of Tuesdays announcement is that box offices and authorized ticket sellers should now refund or exchange tickets for shows through Sept. 6. Industry leaders have been extending the shutdown incrementally as a way of managing cash flow, as well as managing expectations.

(15,697 posts)1. I live in Ashland Oregon
And we have the fantastic rep company OSF (Oregon Shakespeare Festival) and they shuttered just as the season was about to start. They had considered a short season for September and October, but just recently announced that they will not open at all. It has been devastating for OSF and for our community. Can't imagine sitting in a crowded theater any time soon.
Hopefully we will open next year (season runs mid-February through October).
