Bronx Councilman Andy King gets 'unprecedented' suspension, $15K fine for ethics violations

The City Council on Monday voted to suspend and fine a Bronx pol accused of rampant ethics violations in what Council Speaker Corey Johnson called an “unprecedented” punishment in the body’s modern history.

Councilman Andy King was immediately suspended for 30 days and fined $15,000 for using Council resources on his stepdaughter’s Virgin Islands wedding; enabling his wife, a union big, to help run his office to her own benefit; and retaliating against staff who cooperated with investigators, among other charges.

The punishment was approved 44-1, with two abstentions. King himself made the only “no” vote.

In addition to the suspension and fine, the Council voted to install a monitor in King’s district office with power to review all hiring decisions until his term ends in 2021. King also lost his chairmanship of the Committee on Juvenile Justice and was barred from being a member of other committees.
