Foreclosure prevention funds secured at the 11th hour in budget
Organizations around the state that provide foreclosure prevention services headed into the weekend unsure of whether they would have funding for their staff on Monday.
But providers were able to breathe a sigh of relief this week, because the final budget deal that was struck on Sunday included $20 million to continue funding these services. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomos inital spending plan failed to include the $20 million that had in recent years been paid from a pool of money controlled by the state attorney generals office, and was set to run out on March 31.
Sen. Brian Kavanagh, a Manhattan Democrat who championed this issue, said the program will be funded through the states Homes and Community Renewal department using additional settlement money.
Troy Rehabilitation & Improvement Program Director of Community Development Hilary Lamishaw said it took an enormous amount of effort to secure funding this year. The money funds two employees at TRIP who work on foreclosure prevention.
