Another Republican New York senator decides against reelection bid

ALBANY — Republicans in the state Senate have begun to jump ship.

With the GOP’s tenuous hold on the Senate under siege, Sen. John Bonacic, an Orange County Republican, announced Friday he will not seek reelection in the fall — the second GOP senator to do so in as many days.

“The 20 years I have spent in the Senate have been rewarding both personally and professionally,” Bonacic said in statement. “Twenty years, though, is enough.”

Bonacic became the third Republican senator this year to announce plans to step down at the end of the year.
