SARATOGA SPRINGS - The group that wants to preserve the city's commission form of government has accused the League of Women Voters of being unfair and has refused to participate in the league's discussion of the new charter, set to go before voters in November.
The community event, planned for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, was going to include a 30-minute session with three members of the Saratoga Springs Charter Review Commission discussing the changes to the charter. That would be followed by a 10-minute presentation from It's Time, a group that is for charter change, and then a 10-minute presentation from SUCCESS, the group that opposes charter change.
Jane Weihe of SUCCESS, Saratogians United to Continue the Charter Essential to Saratoga's Success, felt that her group should have more than 10 minutes because the charter review commission members, Gordon Boyd, Minita Sanghvi and Barbara Thomas are all for a charter change, making the discussion unbalanced.
"The League has a well-deserved reputation in the community as a source of fair and balanced information on controversial topics," Weihe said. "The format you have offered fails to meet the high standards that have been your hallmark."
