Cuomo touts tax write-off for union workers

ALBANY - New York's $153 billion state budget included some relief for union workers, who will now be able to more easily deduct their union dues from their state taxes.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo held a rally Friday to tout the new provision, which will remove restrictions that limited the number of union workers that could claim the tax benefit.

The new measure, which was approved in the budget last month, is expected to cost the state about $35 million annually, or about $70 each for an estimated 500,000 union members who itemize deductions.

“There’s no bill like it in the country,” Cuomo said. “It says we believe in the labor movement.”
