Former Senate leader John Sampson draws five-year sentence
Almost 18 months after his July 2015 conviction, former state Senate Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson was finally sentenced to five years of incarceration.
The sentence, announced by the office of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Robert Capers, was accompanied by a fine of $75,000. The former Brooklyn pol was found guilty of obstructing justice as investigators probed a $188,500 loan given to the former lawmaker by an associate — a sum that was never repaid. He was also convicted on two counts of lying to FBI agents.
The Daily News reported that Sampson apologized in the courtroom: “My parents raised me better than this, and they didn’t sacrifice everything so I could end up in this predicament.”
In a statement, Capers said Sampson “abused his position as a member of the State Senate and as a member of the bar. He repeatedly broke the law and then compounded those offenses by obstructing a federal criminal investigation. By his actions, Sampson showed that he was not fit to hold office as a state legislator or practice law. He has now been held to account for his criminal conduct.”
