Sen. Heinrich warns worst is yet to come for NM in COVID-19 fight

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Sen. Martin Heinrich said Thursday that the next two weeks will be critical for New Mexico-- as the state battles a COVID-19 outbreak. “I’m going to put it real simply and very bluntly: The behavior of all of us today will determine how many people will die tomorrow. That is literally what we are facing," Heinrich said.

Heinrich warned the worst is yet to come for New Mexico. “The data we are seeing shows that communities across our state are headed into the thick of this public health crisis right now,” he said.

Despite the grim outlook, Heinrich said social distancing is working.

"The physical distancing is that we’ve done so far as a state is already making a difference and it is bending the curve," he said.

My wife and I went out yesterday to pick up some groceries that we had ordered online. The majority of the people we saw in the grocery store parking lot were not wearing masks and/or gloves. Many of these people were in their 60's or older. It was a scary sight.

The couple next door to me (around 60 years old) go out about 5 times a day; no masks.
Each time they go out or come home they have to walk past my living room window.
Being elderly and disabled, I spend 90% of my day in my living room, watching TV or reading.
I hear their door open & close, and then they walk past my window.

I don’t know where they go or what they do. Not shopping, as they did some weeks ago.
Each carries, when they come home, a can of soda, or a soda ‘cup’ from a fast food restaurant.
Maybe they get bored and go out for rides.

Also several times a week they have a small group of visitors (3 or 4 people).

So obviously my neighbors are not ‘staying home’ or ‘social distancing’.
It worries me, due to my age and health.

I try to keep contact with them to a minimal. Often when they hear my door open, they'll open theirs to say hello.
