Google tells me it's a four hour drive to Silver City; 235 miles from me.

I have been to Deming, New Mexico numerous times over the years for long weekend 'getaways'.
That's about an hour drive south of Silver City, and very close to the Mexican border, and I'd spend some time in Palomas, Mexico (a little town with dirt streets, and definitely not a tourist attraction) 35 miles south of Deming.

I've enjoyed Deming a lot over the years, but it is now overrun housing immigrants from Mexico.

I'm guessing you've checked out websites such as:

Have you ever visited Roswell? When I first moved to NM, I was disappointed with Roswell attractions. Legalizing recreational marijuana might help the weak tourist-trap with newly reported UFO sightings! LOL!

The Nuclear Museum, here in Albuquerque is good; but the Very Large Array Radio telescope facility was incredible!

The Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) are two of the most important instruments available to the world's radio astronomers. The VLA, dedicated in 1980, has compiled an enviable record of scientific achievement and demonstrated tremendous versatility as a research tool. The VLBA, dedicated in 1993, already has begun to make landmark contributions to our understanding of the universe.

The VLA is located 52 miles west of Socorro, on U.S. Highway 60. It is operated from a control room on the site. A number of maintenance facilities also reside on the site. There is a Visitor Center at the VLA, open every day from 8:30 a.m. to sunset, and more than 15,000 tourists take advantage of its free displays and self-guided walking tour every year.

I grew up in western Pennsylvania,
and over my 73 years I have lived/worked in Connecticut, Maine, Florida, California, Nebraska,Arkansas and, of course, New Mexico.

Of all the places I have lived, I have found New Mexico to be the friendliest of them all.

Went to high school in ABQ, lived there way back when the balloon races took off from the fair grounds. Been back for some reunions, nothing like watching the morning clouds doing a slow roll down the face of Sandia Peak.
