Bridgegate defense lawyers once again seeking Christie's cell phone

NEWARK — Lawyers for the defendants in the Bridgegate case are back on the trail of Gov. Chris Christie's cell phone.

Defense lawyers issued trial subpoenas last month for electronic devices used by Christie and about a half-dozen former employees of the governor's office during 2013, when a Christie aide and Port Authority officials allegedly had traffic lanes to the George Washington Bridge closed off, causing massive traffic jams in Fort Lee as political retaliation.

Michael Baldassare, representing former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni, confirmed following a court status conference Tuesday that new subpoenas were sent to Christie and the others last month.

Even though U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton ruled against subpoenas for Christie's and others' cell phones July 7, Baldassare said the new subpoenas can be filed because they are trial subpoenas that are subject to a different legal standard from pre-trial subpoenas.
