Lakewood school board settles suit for $174K
LAKEWOOD - Two former school district employees who claimed they were pressured to turn a blind eye to "discriminatory" and unlawful practices by the Board of Education have settled their wrongful termination lawsuit for $174,000.
Without admitting to any wrongdoing, the board agreed in April to pay $43,457 to a former business administrator, Arlene Biesiada, and $57,857 to her former assistant, Lisa Miller. The balance of the settlement, $72,685, goes to their attorney, Patrick J. Whalen.
The settlement prohibits the parties involved from discussing the terms of the agreement.
In their complaint, filed in state Superior Court in 2014, Biesiada, of Millstone, and Miller, of Plumsted, said they were fired in retaliation for voicing objections to practices they believed were "against the law, discriminatory, contrary to public policy and unethical."
