Christie's road project shutdown is now in effect

TRENTON — Hundreds of road projects across New Jersey have shut down as a stalemate over transportation funding between Gov. Chris Christie and the state Senate drags on.

Christie signed an executive order last week to suspend $3.5 billion in "nonessential" road construction work as lawmakers can't agree on a plan to replenish the nearly broke Transportation Trust Fund, which provides money for road, bridge, and rail projects throughout the Garden State.

State Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said this week he has been meeting with his staff and fellow lawmakers to discuss a possible compromise.

But a spokesman for Sweeney said Friday afternoon that there was "nothing new" on the talks. Sweeney did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
