How one N.J. mayor put a turkey on every table in a city of 70,000 people

UNION CITY — Jose Algarim stood on his porch this past Saturday doing what he described as “his part.”

“You see, it’s up to my wife what we make and how exactly the turkey is prepared,” the 53-year-old said with a laugh. “I just stay out of the way.”

As if on cue, a U-Haul truck weighed down by hundreds of turkeys pulled up to the Palisade Avenue home, and right alongside it volunteers, with Union City Mayor Brian Stack leading the charge.

Stack handed Algarim a plastic bag with a frozen turkey, wished him a Happy Thanksgiving and headed to the next home.
