N.J.'s top Republicans aren't willing to say county leader accused of bigotry should quit

The message that came from the Sussex County Republican Committee’s Twitter account was unquestionably bigoted.

“Islam is a death cult,” read the meme county Chairman Jerry Scanlan retweeted. “America must eradicate Islam from every town, city, county and state in our homeland!”

While Sussex Democrats have said Scanlan should resign in the week since the retweets first surfaced, there has been no such call from New Jersey’s top three Republicans.

Assembly Republican leader Jon Bramnick denounced the tweets but stopped short of saying Scanlan should step down. State GOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt said through a spokesman that Scanlan’s apology was enough. Senate Republican leader Tom Kean Jr., did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
