Are Rutgers professors about to go on strike? Here's what we know.

Rutgers University administrators and representatives of the school’s faculty union are scheduled to face off at an all-day bargaining session Monday that union officials called “critical” as professors weigh whether to call the first faculty strike in the state university’s nearly 253-year history.

Members of the Rutgers AAUP-AFT, which represents 4,800 full-time faculty and graduate workers, voted to authorize a strike last month, saying they were frustrated by the slow progress of contract talks that have gone on for more than a year.

Union leaders said they could call a strike at any time, but both sides met for several days last week and are scheduled to meet again Monday to try to reach a deal.

What are the chances of a strike?

Authorizing a strike is a common negotiating tactic and does not necessarily mean there will be a strike. But last month’s strike authorization vote, in which 88 percent of the faculty union’s members voted in favor of green-lighting a strike, is unusual for Rutgers and was a sign that negotiations were not going well.
